If you go into a showroom its hard to find a motorcycle over 500cc that has damper forks. Whether a modern fork oil is sold as a "oil" or a "fluid" is a marketing decision and whether it is made for a damper rod or a cartridge is determined by its viscosity, and some of the very best fork oils available for cartridges are marketed as "fork oils".ĭamper rod fork systems have been pretty much obsolete for the last 15-20 years and used primarily to cut costs in small beginner bikes and those sold in third world countries. Most of fork oils sold today will not work very well in a damper rod system because they are much too light of viscosity.
This may have been true in 1990 when cartridge forks were starting to be used in street bikes but it completely ignores the simple fact that damper rod systems are designed to use oil that is twice as thick as cartridge fork systems.
